The Cuban Observatory for Human Rights (OCDH) issued a statement on Tuesday urging judges, prosecutors, military personnel, and government officials in Cuba to refrain from participating in repressive actions against citizens. They highlighted the increase in migration of these individuals, particularly to the US and Europe.

In recent months, individuals from the regime-controlled judicial system and other governmental departments have arrived or attempted to arrive — in the US and other countries after participating in notorious trials against peaceful demonstrators or in political repression.

The OCDH appealed to Cuban officials at various levels to refrain from contributing to the severe repression in Cuba, stating:

“Refraining would be the first step towards combating injustice, whether in a courtroom, prison, neighborhood, or workplace.”

The organization also called on democratic governments, particularly the US and Spain, to conduct more thorough due diligence to prevent human rights violators in Cuba from entering these countries.

It emphasized that it is unjust for those who cause suffering to other Cubans, engage in high-level corruption, or prolong the country’s dire situation to have open access to democratic nations.

Recently, Cuban priest Alberto Reyes, known for his criticism of the regime’s repressive actions, addressed this issue on Facebook, warning that those who oppress people would not escape their conscience even if they emigrate.

In less than two months, at least four former Cuban regime officials have emigrated or attempted to emigrate to the US, with some even seeking political asylum. The most recent case involves former Camagüey prosecutor Rosabel Roca Sampedro, who requested prison sentences for 11J demonstrators and now seeks asylum in the US.

Father Alberto Reyes warned these repressors:

“When freedom comes, you may go unnoticed and hide your repressive history, but you will never escape your conscience, which tells you, as you beat people, that you are taking the life of your own people.”
