The Assembly of Cuban Filmmakers (ACC) has denounced the punishment imposed on the Director of the Museum of the Image, Demian Rabilero del Castillo, for programming documentaries created by members of their organization. This incident marks another episode in the ongoing conflict between Cuban cultural institutions and artists striving for creative freedom.

Celebrating a year since its foundation, the ACC is once again embroiled in controversy. The recent sanction against Rabilero del Castillo, who was removed from his position for allegedly violating the Constitution and regulations of the Cuban cultural regime, has sparked widespread criticism. The ACC considers this act a blatant instance of censorship and exclusion by the authorities.

Rabilero del Castillo’s dismissal was justified under Article 29.1 of Decree Law №13/2020, citing his negligence. The Ministry of Culture, led by Alpidio Alonso Grau, pointed out that the ACC is an unrecognized organization that includes filmmakers who oppose the Cuban government.

The ACC reminded the public that similar authoritarian actions were taken a year ago against another filmmaker, leading to widespread outrage within the artistic community. Almost 700 creators signed a declaration condemning the violation of intellectual property rights, which ultimately led to the formation of the ACC.

The ACC claims that various forms of pressure and coercion continue to be exerted on its members. Despite these challenges, the organization remains steadfast in its fight against dogmatism, exclusion, and institutional abuse.

The ACC concluded by reaffirming their civic right to address relevant issues and challenge the cultural policies that fail to recognize the complexities of Cuban reality. They also expressed their solidarity with Demian Rabilero.
